  • In a mouse model of generalized convulsive status epilepticus (SE), deletion of the GluA1 subunit of the AMPA receptor, globally or specifically in the hippocampus, reduced the duration and severity of SE and reduced SE-associated mortality, an effect which was also observed by introduction of an AMPA receptor agonist.

Why this matters

    This study suggests a role for GluA1 subunit mediated plasticity in sustaining severe SE, which is associated with cardiorespiratory compromise, and indicates AMPA receptor agonists may be developed as a therapy for SE.
