Association of CSF and MRI markers with atrophy in multiple sclerosis


  • Neurofilament light chain (NfL) and chitinase 3-like protein 1 (CHI3L1) in the cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) were differentially related to the atrophy of the brain and spinal cord.

Why this matters

  • Brain and spinal cord atrophy are established paraclinical markers of disease progression and are associated with axonal degeneration and demyelination in MS.

  • With the advent of immune therapies in MS, the results from this study may suggest that CSF levels of CHI3L1 and NfL can reliably predict disease activity and treatment response.
