Takeaway
Neurofilament light chain (NfL) and chitinase 3-like protein 1 (CHI3L1) in the cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) were differentially related to the atrophy of the brain and spinal cord.
Why this matters
Brain and spinal cord atrophy are established paraclinical markers of disease progression and are associated with axonal degeneration and demyelination in MS.
With the advent of immune therapies in MS, the results from this study may suggest that CSF levels of CHI3L1 and NfL can reliably predict disease activity and treatment response.
