Effect of vitamin D and omega-3 fatty acid supplementation on stroke outcomes


  • Supplementation with vitamin D or omega-3 fatty acids prior to stroke did not improve post-stroke outcomes, although a trend towards improvement was observed for omega-3 fatty acids.

Why this matters

  • Current evidence suggests that lower levels of serum vitamin D at hospital admission are associated with greater stroke severity, larger infarct size, poorer functional outcomes and higher risk of death, and that the intake of omega-3 fatty acids is associated with lower risk of stroke in healthy populations.
