Investigating MR‐guided focused ultrasound thalamotomy for essential tremor

Unlike bilateral radiofrequency thalamotomy, abandoned because it worsened speech and balance in some patients, bilateral thalamotomy by a less invasive method – magnetic resonance‐guided focused ultrasound (MRgFUS) – appears to be safe to use for the treatment of essential tremor, new data suggest.

The preliminary findings were from a study of 5 patients who had undergone unilateral MRgFUS thalamotomy at the Hospital Universitario HM Puerta del Sur and Universidad CEU San Pablo in Madrid, Spain.
